One Person who stands out as influential in Mr. Smalligan’s development as an artist was Mr. Burke E. Porter, President and founder of the Burke E. Porter Machinery Company in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He was a tireless supporter of the arts and he gave a lot of encouragement, advice and support to promising artists early in their careers.
The fourteen sculptures by Mr. Smalligan pictured below were purchased by Mr. Porter and are included in the Burke and Dorothy Porter Collection of more than 200 pieces of art displayed in the Burke E. Porter Machinery Company corporate offices.
