Prior to working the piece with a chisel and mallet, an electric chain saw and an Arbortech tool were used to remove larger sections of wood. “Horseplay” was carved from this well seasoned Cherry log. One can get an idea of the size from the aluminum baseball bat on the right. In warmer weather, Charlie brings his work out on the back deck. “Horseplay” is placed on a portable workbench. A lot of the rough work has already been done and Charlie continues to work with a mallet and chisel to remove larger pieces of wood.A fine line marker is used to indicate wood which still needs to be chipped away. Charlie uses carbide cutters and diamond and ruby grinders for fine detail work. The hand sized grinders are powered by flexible shaft motor tools including those made by Foredom, Dremel and Black and Decker. The finished piece has been carefully sanded, stained and then clear coated. Click on any thumbnail for a full sized photo
